| Comments: |
the access road up mt rowe was cleared to start then had packed vehicle tracks about 2/3 of the way up before being boot tracked up to the summit. crusty top layer with granulated powder underneath. same crusty snow across the ridge that had been tracked to varying degrees. when the trail turned away from the ski trail on gunstock, above where they were making snow today, i cut over and onto the ski trail. for the most part i followed a previously compacted swath with a crust on top up to the summit of gunstock. from there to belknap there was a broken track with some minor ice bulges on belknap. i doubled back to the brook trail which had not been recently travelled and had a few inches of snow with the same crust on top. where the trail first crosses the ski trails i headed right down the closed ski trails to the base area. i put on light traction on the ascent of rowe and kept it on the rest of the hike though most of the route could have been booted. snowshoes may have been helpful in spots, but weren't necessary with todays conditions.
