Trails: Starr King Road, Starr King Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, February 21, 2015
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: There is a fair amount of room in the trail parking off Rt. 2. I decided not to park at the end of the plowed section even though it is above the last used driveway thinking fire trucks might need it, but a couple of cars used it today.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Unpacked Powder
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail in good shape. The paint blazes are often rather faint but unneeded today with the trail trench. If it drifts in with new snow and wind, those unfamiliar with the ridge section have traditionally found a couple places where it is easy to get off trail.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Great trails for dogs today. Pepper had a little icing of his paws but I used Vaseline on them and he could remove the ice easily. Dylan was wearing pawz boots and had no apparent icing issues. I don't know if the small fox terrier we saw had been treated but he/she had no apparent problems. All three dogs looked to be having a great time.

Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Somehow my small red Canon camera in its black case went AWOL despite being put into my pack to make sure I didn't lose it. It must have legs and maybe it doesn't want to be returned; it wants a life with someone who will do more than take a few snapshots of his dog. Maybe so, but I'd like the SD cards with Pepper pictures on it.

Comments
Comments: The trail was a splendid snowshoe, although the last people up were barebooting. They required so many short steps. We were happy to meet and visit with Damselfly with her AMC Group and also Dylan & Eva. It was a cold start according to the thermometer, but due to this winter's acclimatization and little wind, it was quite comfortable. I put a thin balaclava on for the ridge where there was a light wind and a little drifting on the trail, but it was no big deal. On the drive home, the temps dropped suddenly and the winds really picked up heading into and through Franconia Notch, and then on exiting it on the south the temps shot back up and the winds stopped.
