Two more destinations I've been holding onto for a cloudy day. It was snowshoes all the way, and the conditions were less than ideal. The snowpack is very soft, and I was still sinking even with the shoes. Grades are mostly easy though, except for the steep section in the middle of the WST. I followed an old, melted snowshoe track all the way. At the pond, the track does not follow the current trail, but turns left and follows the former AT route (abandoned) along the shore, then loops around to connect with the actual route. This confused me at first until I figured it out. A very quiet and lightly traveled hike, didn't see a soul. Nice views at the pond looking up to Mist, and the cliffs on Webster Slide are pretty impressive from below. Limited views from the former shelter clearing at the summit. I dropped down a bit to one of the lower ledges to get a better view, but skipped the steeper side paths due to the crumbling snow. I found a side path which I think (?) went to the high point. I considered going over to Mt. Mist, but decided it wasn't worth the extra slog. ;) |
