Afternoon loop over Monadnock from south, RGoH party of 8. Ascended generally via Halfway House Tr./Cliffwalk/Amphitheater/White Arrow. Descended Smith Summit/Amphitheater/Sidefoot/Old Toll Road. Overall, mountain is showing a lot of bare bone but the more popular trails are extreme ice luges and most trails have some ice. Lower White Arrow is solid wedding cake ice as usual for spring--it's an ice climb (we avoided it). Upper White Arrow less messy but the steep gullies are slick. The side trails were easier walking with some tricky spots, particularly the upper Sidefoot with nearly solid wedding cake for 200' below Amphitheater. Snow is deep in gullies and drift-bins but was firm to walk on with temps in 30s--however, there will be messy postholing when it softens. Conditions aren't good for any footwear options right now. Choice of grinding your spikes or falling on your *ss. |
