Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Kudos to whomever created a workaround for the old logging road bridge over Peabody Brook that was recently removed by the logger who installed the bridge. This workaround was discovered today when I hiked the Peabody Brook Trail in order to access the Bald Cap Peak Ledges Trail where I would do some maintenance. The workaround consists of a short path (on the west side of the old bridge site) which leads to a series of large boulders in the brook with a large log wedged firmly between the boulders. It took less than a minute to scamper across the brook using this improvised bridge. Might not work at times of high water, but should be okay for normal conditions.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The Peabody Brook Trail is generally in good shape until you reach a point where the trail crosses a brook a little over 2 miles from the trailhead. From about that point onward, the trail has numerous blowdowns that are relatively recent. Some sort of severe weather event must have hit this particular area. This weather event also impacted my adopted Bald Cap Peak Ledges Trail. So much so, that the trail corridor was difficult to follow due to the massive number of downed trees. Was able to clean up enough of the damage to make the trail passable, but there is still much work that needs to be done, which I hope to accomplish within the next week. In the meantime, please be aware that there is one spot where you will need to go about 20 feet off trail to work around a particularly large patch of blowdowns. Fortunately, the trail corridor is well-blazed, and so you should experience little difficulty with spotting a blaze that will lead you back to the trail. And, here is one other note related to the severe weather event that impacted this area. Numerous blowdowns could be seen looking down the Peabody Brook Trail as it heads toward Dream Lake. If the damage continued all the way to Dream Lake, then someone has a lot of work to do!
