Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Lost track of the number of stream crossings. The only slightly difficult one was of the Whiteface River.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A volunteer was doing some work on the Bennett St trail. Kudos!! Flat Mtn pond trail in the wilderness was narrow, and occasionally rough. My kind of trail :)
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: as long as you don't mind a wet dog, this is a perfect hike
Bugs
Bugs: surprisingly few bugs at Flat Mtn pond...a few black flies but the wind kept them away. On the other hand, the mosquitoes were a PITA at lower elevations. 20 percent deet is crap...i dont care what the studies say.

Comments
Comments: I've been meaning to get to Flat Mtn pond for years, and I finally jumped on that Friday. Bennett St trail was a fairly easy, though a bit rough in spots. Nice cascades along the way. I took a right at the intersection of the Flat Mtn pond trail and cruised to the pond. Trail was easy going with trivial crossings. The dam at the pond is now broken, with a small amount of water spilling out. Let's hope it gets fixed. I would hate to see the pond drain out. Trail along the pond gets rugged and fun with a few pointless ups and downs. I took a break on a big rock at about the halfway point. What a spot! Some moose sign along the northern section of the pond, good to see. I've heard the moose took a big hit in the Sandwich range. Trail down to the junction with the McCrillis was beautiful, and if it hadn't have been for the mosquitoes I would have lingered. THe final 1.7 to the trailhead was hell, thanks to the bugs. I reapplied the bug spray at the trailhead and in the process was bit 4 times. Roadwalk was tiring but I made fairly decent time. Clouds were gathering so I hustled back just in case. I can't wait to return to this part of the Sandwich range.
