Comments: for those interested in getting to the firetower site on bear island, also known as st. johns on the lake church, this is one possible summer route. from the landing i paddled straight across the channel towards bear island. this was interesting today given the number of motorboats and the wake they were creating. it was the first vaguely open water test of my kayak and myself and it went ok. i then paddled around the island heading southeast taking refuge for a bit behind dolly and penny islands before getting back out into the chop and shortly entering a small bay where the boat landing for the church is located. the church and the trail to it are represented on the usgs map and the church is also shown on google maps. the docks are signed as private, but there was unposted shoreline to the west of the docks where i hopped out and picked up the trail to the church (i believe that by contacting the church you might also get permission to use the docks). it was only a few minutes walk uphill. the church has services on sundays, but i don't believe the tower is ever really open to the general public. the building itself is quite interesting and located in a beautiful spot adjacent to other hiking trails on the island.
