Comments
Comments: i was trying to park in a spot from which i could hike both of these peaks in one hike and stumbled on the knights pond access. from their parking i walked down to the pond, which is quite nice and i will revisit to hike the loop, and followed the loop a short distance north before starting a steep, but open bushwhack up to the west ridge of longstack. i made sure to stay well west of the impressive south cliffs. up on the ridge things had been cut over a while back and there was lots of low bush blueberry which made walking interesting. i soon reached the cliffs and their fantastic views. from there i noted a herd path which soon went to an atv track. i followed this east towards the highpoint before leaving on another short bushwhack towards the summit. i knew there was a house near the highpoint, but was not quite sure how close. i quickly popped out into an opening and the house was right there and i went no further. it seems either the summit was blasted and the house is on the old highpoint or there is a spot just adjacent to the house that is the higest spot. either way i would not violate peoples privacy to find out. on the way back just before reaching the atv trail i noted a couple posted signs i somehow missed on the way in i am assuming relate to the property on the summit. from there i followed the atv trail down to rines road where there is a large atv parking area. the old sand pits (and parking lot) around there are also impromptu gun ranges so be ready for that. i then followed rines road back to the south side of rines hill and headed up skidder roads much of the way to the summit before bushwhacking towards the highpoint which is a large raised rock outcrop much like on nearby devils den. there were bolted in climbing routes, but nothing hikable until i got around the east side where there was a cleft with decent holds and a fixed roped at the top. this allowed access to the top of the cliffs and the highpoint. no views, but a very neat spot. i descended from the top the same way then took a line back towards the car finding open woods then skid roads that funneled me back down the parking area on the access road.

a couple semi local peaks that have been on my list for a while. some very nice hiking/bushwhacking with the views from the longstack cliffs to the belknaps and merrymeeting lake area peaks being the highlight.
