Comments
Comments: I started in microspikes. Sawyer river trail was broken out and soon becomes snowmobile packed. I followed it to the Hancock Notch trail, which I took for about 1/4 mi., to where the trail gets very close to the river. I carefully crossed the river and bushwhacked a short distance to the north branch of sawyer river road, which was snowmobile packed. This road ends at a landing, but the sled tracks went a little further on old roads/herd paths. After the tracks stopped, I put on snowshoes, and was able to follow herdpaths for a significant distance. I had some great view of the captain, especially from a slide. When the herd paths stopped, I bushwhacked towards the Carigain/Captain col. I did hit some steep, and somewhat thick going. Upon nearing the top of the ridge, I had to slab to avoid some impassable ice flows. Once in the col I made the thicker-than-I-remembered bushwhack up towards the high point. I hit an impassable cliff and had to back-track a bit to find another way up. I took off my snowshoes to descend this steep section and did not end up putting them back on. After reaching the highpoint and following my tracks back to the col, I took a side trip to the pond. I then followed my tracks out.

Given the easy surface conditions, lack of snow in trees, and fairly warm temps, this was a pretty tame winter accent. The views and the pond were pretty amazing. Great to revisit in winter.
