I started on the hard packed east pond trail in light traction. A short distance below the height of land, I put on snowshoes and began the bushwhack to east. I think it pays to start north of the height of land for this bushwhack. Surface conditions were easy and the woods were initially not too bad. As I got past half way up, matchstick woods started, followed by thick, snow-loaded spruce. My tracks would indicate that I was initially within ten feet of the highpoint, but missed it and ended up spending 30 min searching in snowy, thick woods.
From the top of east, I made a line for the bump between east and middle. Woods were not bad on this route. I made a point to find the top of the bump, which is obvious. From there, I made a line for middle, finding easy woods, except some thick stuff in the col.
From middle, I descended to little east pond. The initial going was extremely poor. There were cliffs to skirt, its very steep, and really thick. It took me a very long time to get down to the pond. There were no recent tracts on the little east pond trail. I ended up leaving snowshoes on until the car.
Following my tracks would likely be hard, except up high on the ridge. |
