Comments
Comments: we walked up the snowmobiled bear notch road which had thin cover and is currently closed to snowmobiles for that reason. we walked maybe 10-15 minutes to a logging road leaving right. the only marking is a no snowmobiles sign. we took this into a landing then did a short bushwhack to pick up a skidder road that took us up into one of the large clearcuts on the lower slopes of bear. views to the sandwich range were phenomenal. we noted a higher clearcut one ridge north so did a short steep drop and ascent through a drainage to head up into it. more great views now including peaks to the west. we then hit the woods and bushwhacked on the path of least resistance up the southwest running ridge to the summit ridge. woods were a mixed bag of hardwood and evergreen with some scrappy going, but for the most part we were able to weave an open line up. this left us a short distance south of the recognized highpoint and we were able to mostly follow the remains of the old hiking trail on the ridge to the summit. some limited views from there as well. we descended in our tracks to the upper clearcut then followed its access skidder road back down to a landing just off bear notch road. this landing is about 5 minutes past the road we followed in also marked with a no snowmobile sign as well as some flagging. a more direct route going in that way for sure, but you miss the great views from the bigger cut. snow depths varied. not much more than a few well consolidated inches down low with powder on top, but pockets of deeper snow higher up. generally a well consolidated base with powder on top. good snowshoeing though some more depth would be nice. great peak.
