For Carters, ditto what Baxter's Mom said.
After starting out in Hillsound spikes, wore snowshoes from 3500 ft on North Carter Trail all the way to Wildcat base lodge! Beautiful new snow and drifts up on the ridges; winter wonderland was pretty darn tootin'.
I continued down to Carter Notch from the Dome in snowshoes and was surprised - shocked actually - to not have to switch to crampons which I carried all day. Yippee ki yi. There WAS a lot of ice, but the new snow seems to be somewhat adhering so the steep dropoffs didn't have the feeling of potential deathfalls.. ;p
Wildcat Ridge was a bit chopped up by barebooters, but my friend who joined me at Carter Notch and I smoothed it out pretty good with snowshoes, and I think we were last across that ridge today.
Excellent views into the Washington ravines and spectacular cloud formations descending Polecat. Glimpses of near (?) full moon popped out on drive home.
Congrats to FP for getting all 3 Carters today. |
