Trails: Carr Mountain Trail, Waternomee Falls Spur
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, March 5, 2016
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Room for a few cars at the plowed pullout 0.7 mi. up Clifford Brook Road in Warren (WMNF sign). Clifford Brook Road was icy but sanded in the morning, and muddy in the afternoon. Do not park at the top of the road by the last house.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Ice - Blue, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: No problems, all easily crossed or ice bridged. At the first branch crossing on the WFS, the ice was thin right at the crossing. I went upstream a few yards to a thicker section.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Several stepover and duckunder blowdowns along the way. This half of the CMT is blazed only until it enters the woods after the clearing. About 0.1 mi. after the WFS junction, there is occasional flagging the rest of the way but no blazes. Trail is obscure and brushy in many places, I imagine it could be tricky in summer. The trail follows old logging roads most of the way, with some severely eroded sections. The WFS is also flagged but I could see it being fairly obscure in summer.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Sure.
Bugs
Bugs: Nope.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nothing.

Comments
Comments: A return to this ex-52WAV peak, this time from the Warren side, which I'd never done. A long gradual approach using old logging roads for the most part. Higher up the road disappears into an actual trail. I found this approach to be a bit deceiving, as there are several spots where it looks and feels like you are just about to reach the ridgecrest, only to be met with more climbing. On the way up I took the short side trip to Waternomee Falls, which are frozen solid. It would be neat to come back during heavy flow.

I wore spikes round-trip. Snowpack was frozen rock solid, although a little bit softer higher up. Nothing that requires snowshoes right now. If it warms up you will need them. Many ice bulges and frozen stream crossings along the way, easily negotiated. The short scramble up the slab just below the fir wave takes some care in descending.

Bright sun today with just a touch of wind. Clear but distant views over the trees from the fire tower steps.
