| Comments: |
I started out with light traction thinking the surface would be firm and crusty just as my hike to Peak Above The Nubble earlier in the week but the area below the Notch received more snow than rain and there was 2-3" of unpacked powder at the start. Trail was broken out to the first brook crossing and then I had to break trail the rest of the way. Snow depths increased as I gained elevation to a maximum of 10" above the Cascades. Some drifting (6"-18") was experienced around the ponds. There was ice beneath the snow making the steeper sections unstable and in parts crampons may have been a better choice for short stretches especially on the steep sections of the bushwhack. |
