Trails
Trails: Starr King Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, March 21, 2016
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Starr King road is lumpy after the last driveway, but fine if you take it easy. Three other cars when we got there, we met the other 7 hikers and 1 dog during our hike. We were the last car when we got back: we closed the mountain for the day I guess.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Wet Trail, Ice - Blue, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow - Spring Snow, Slush
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Nothing significant.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: One duckunder blowdown between Starr King and Waumbek. Not a serious problem.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw one aforementioned dog, a young golden retriever, not leashed but not a problem. Trail was fine for dogs with the exception for some significant blue ice bulges at around 3000'. We noticed the tracks the dog made as he created his own go-around to avoid the ice.
Bugs
Bugs:
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: We spotted a glove and a dog leash at the base of the trailhead sign.

Comments
Comments: On the trip driving north from MA we were in light snow the whole way until we got through Franconia Notch, when the snow stopped and the ground was clear of snow. By the time we started on the trail (10:15 or so) the snow had reached us and continued till we summitted Waumbek around 1 pm. We donned microspikes and (Lone Wolf) crampons right before the ice bulges and kept them on to the summits and most of the way down. By the time we got back to the car just after 3 the snow down there was pretty much melted. I don't know how much had fallen there during the day but it appeared to be maybe an inch. The sky cleared beautifully on the way down and by the trip home the weather was great with great views from the car. Thanks to Camo Mike and Lone Wolf for a great hike. Number 47 for LW, 18? for CM.
