Wet and very muddy trail for the first 1.5 miles or so, just into section where the conifers are the predominant trees. Trail at that point becomes a ribbon of ice through the forest, so we opted for microspikes/Hillsounds, which were perfect for the conditions. Warmer temps meant the ice was soft and in some places, there was water running over the ice. The spring was flowing well. Up high between Starr King and Waumbek, the trail was a combo of compacted frozen snow and ice. Despite the ice and mud, it was fun and fast hike to Waumbek with Claudette and Kevin! |
