Comments: I took my 2 friends on what I thought would be a pleasant moderate climb, hopefully ice-free but it wasn't. They do some beginner level ice climbing. As soon as we started there was a thin layer of new snow over presumably icy spots. Not a problem the snow was not dusty but sticky. After a while they put on Kahtoola spikes, I had new Hillsounds. After the junction and the trail started getting steep the ice covered everything especially the very steep pitches. After struggling up a few areas with the aid of the trees and bushes, we reconsidered. Whoever was ahead of us solo was now wearing crampons, we could tell that. WE visualized hiking down, possibly bushwhacking. Then we agreed, Let's not and say we did. Obviously full crampons were the safe choice and we didn't have them. A length of rope would have been nice, too. With the snow cover, we just couldn't tell where the ice was really bad and hard, which mostly it all was. We did the downclimb without mishap, sometimes bushwhacking down the worst sections. A little skid here and there but noone fell. I think we made the correct decision even if it seemed wimpy.
