Comments
Comments: this was a redline trip (11mi RT) for me and BSK agreed to tag along. couldn't have asked for better weather. we did not see or hear another person the entire trip.
Cabin Tr is dry. blazing is scant. there is a large blow down blocking the trail (halfway?) up that you can bypass by following pink surveyor tape and paying attention. we both carried spikes but with BSK being the tough guy that he is, he skated over ice patches or skirted around them. i put them/on off a half dozen times throughout the day for sections of trail where there were long stretches of ice/packed snow, but light traction is all that was needed. Square Ledge Trail is a little rough in spots but there wasn't any ice on the rocks or ledges. on the way up we heard a peregrine falcon, but didn't see it, though on the way down there was a very loud dispute between a large crow and a falcon. our presence probably wasn't helping matters. Oliverian Brook Tr, if i remember correctly, had a very narrow stretch of trail that is close to, and very high above the brook, that was covered in ice. BSK had no problems. i crawled across it (even with spikes) hoping one false move wouldn't send me plummeting down into the water. Oliverian probably had the most ice/packed snow, but spikes were fine. once thru the junction again and heading down Kelley Tr, we were in the sun and no spikes were necessary. Kelley Tr is very scenic changing from hardwoods, to moss covered rock formations, to a babbling stream cutting through layered walls of granite. Gordon Path completely free of the white stuff and very dry. a walk on a woods road. a short road walk back to the car. fantastic day.
