Comments
Comments: A few weeks ago I took off my light traction a little too soon and ended up taking a good fall on some ice while coming down the Olivarian Brook Trail from Passaconnaway. My shoulder was still sore from that fall, so I was looking for a mostly ice-free route for this weekend's hike. Snowflea's report from Thursday sold me on this route. There was very little snow or ice. I put on light traction to cross the Jefferson snowfield, but two women easily barefooted across ahead of me. I put on light traction again to cross a few snowfields on Lion Head Trail.

I didn't see any hikers until Madison. I saw about 10 hikers between Madison and Washington, and lots of hikers from Washington on.

I forgot that nothing would be open on Washington and that there would be no water. I was out when I got there. I filtered water down at Lake of the Clouds.

I tried out some new shoes on this hike. Altra Superiors have great traction on dirt, but the soles have hard rubber that's like grease on wet rocks. Fortunately, most of the trails were dry.

The weather was perfect. It was a great day to be above treeline.
