Comments
Comments: Jack was generous to hike the Whitcombs with me after he completed so many solo hikes to finish his NHH300 last month (he might have recommended ear plugs for our journey today). We followed the road and then took the right onto the old snowmobile trail that did pop back out on the road--this short section of the snowmobile trail is abandoned and we didn't take it on the return trip. When the road went straight we again turned right on the well graded snowmobile trail. We stayed on this until about 2200' when we reached a wide log landing area and then we went East into the woods. Starting here I hoped we'd avoid steep areas. This was successful and we enjoyed mostly open woods and nice moose herd paths all the way to the recognized summit. From the summit we went south and soon we found tight woods and ledgy steep areas. We worked our way down and once into the col the woods opened right back up and we had an enjoyable stroll up to South's recognized highpoint. Not too many visitors since Jack was here more than two years ago--only 6 entries! Back down we went (NW) and met up with the drainage, plenty of hobble bush and open woods and good herd paths on old log skid roads. We stayed above the brook and found an old logging road that popped us back out on the snowmobile trail just East of the new bridge. The sun finally came out and the red and gold leaves were bold and bright n the trees all around us. On the way back we saw a grand view of Whitcomb West and we noticed a town line boundary near the big old culvert that has a small rock cairn sitting on it! This was a good day, thanks Jack, it was a fun day.
