Comments
Comments: From the end of Slippery Brook Road I walked around the gate and then walked a short distance before walking around the gate of the forest road on the right (duh, cannot remember the number). At the beginning there was about a foot of snow with a dusting on top and a thin crust, I broke through about 4 or 5 inches. There was one old set of snowshoe tracks coming down and they helped make it a bit easier but then they turned right up another forest road--mystery. I snowshoed up this forest road until about where it ended at I think 1800' I started my whack here and headed straight at the North Peak. As it got steeper there were lots of boulders and sometimes it was awkward weaving around them. There was a good 2 feet of snow up there! Found some cool views from Mt. Wash and more but it was clouding up fast--Oh Kearsarge looked so close! I found a good route off the peak and hit the wide open hardwood col between and headed up the ridge to avoid the steeps then cut almost due east to hit the summit. Love the hardwoods. I followed my tracks back down to the col and then I headed back up a couple hundred feet and then slabbed back to find my tracks and hopes for moose tracks. No fresh moose tracks not antlers, only one old bed with tracks I found today. This snowshoe went better than I hoped, it was really nice and I avoided the really steep sections. I hope to return and follow my tracks up and then cut to Ricker's Knoll very soon. As I was nearing the bottom I caught up with a man snowshoeing down and he said he has a loop from his home to that forest road and he snowshoes and then walked back the road--Tony! He makes good tracks. Today was a nice day in the woods started out at 14 degrees and it was 27 when I returned to the car. yeah winter!
