| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
The Ammonoosuc Ravine parking lot is closed for the winter. I parked in front of the gate. Would probably park at the Cog Railway next time. |
|
| Surface Conditions: |
Ice - Black, Ice - Blue, Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Ice - Breakable Crust |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
Traction, Snowshoes |
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
Ice bridges are not well developed, making for some sketchy areas.
First crossing was dicey. Gem pool area sounded quite hollow, but still held.
All other crossings were either frozen or trivial. |

| Comments: |
Traffic from Ammo Trailhead parking lot is light, so trail is not as well broken out. Would probably park at the Cog next time. Microspikes were perfect from trailhead up to Gem pool. Crampons are appropriate from Gem Pool all the way up to the summit. The crampons made the steep climb in the packed snow much easier. The crampons were helpful for the ice flows as you approach Lake of the Clouds.
Climb to Monroe was easy on crusty ice. Broke through a few times, but not enough to justify switching to snowshoes.
Not enough time to climb Washington that day - had to be home in time for other obligations :(
From door to door, it took 4hrs and 30min. Temperatures were in the 20's, and wind was around 15-20mph for the morning, clear summits with scattered clouds above. Amazing conditions for late December! |
