Snowshoes car to car - Sawyer River road was well packed from snowmobiles, quick hike up. Snow became a bit more unconsolidated once on the trail but still a good track - lots of streamlettes in the first mile were still open, few steps in the water caused ice balls to form on our snowshoes. Old trail broken out from the old junction with Carrigain Notch trail by the big crossing, no evidence of any traffic on the new reroute. Passed one guy right before starting the climb who had camped out the night before and broken trail to the summit, thanks for your hard work! - passed a total of five people on the switchbacks, super happy that they were all wearing snowshoes! Snow became a bit looser right before Signal Ridge, some deeper sections on the ridge but not too bad. Great views from the summit, mostly sunny and a light breeze. Trip down was wonderful on the more packed out track - the last few miles of trail before the road are a bit narrower though, likely from barebooters earlier in the weekend. While the trail is now broken out and decently well packed, not wearing snowshoes would ruin it and make for a much more difficult ascent - even with mixed precip coming in tomorrow, if hiking this trail soon plan on wearing snowshoes all day. Wonderful day out with Ali and Hannah - we've put more miles on our snowshoes the past three days than we did doing SSW last year and it's only January 2nd, hope it's a sign of more good things to come the year! |
