Comments
Comments: Definitely not the ideal approach to Savage (by a long shot), but our group persevered and made it up and back, not too much worse for the wear. Parked on Mason Road, and not seeing any no trespassing signs (only signs prohibiting ATV's and snowmobiles), we headed up an old skid road just up the way. We followed logging roads off and on for a bunch of the lower elevations of the whack, deviating when they took us off bearing. Headed for the long curving west ridge of Savage, we stuck to either side of the crest when we could, trying to find the best woods (which were fleeting). Some sections of open woods, but mostly jailbar evergreens, thick spruce, and blowdowns galore. Skirted along the edge of the interesting southeast facing bowl below the ridge, and the woods relented most of the way up to the summit. Topped out and signed into the canister just before 4, after a 6 hour trudge, return taking half the time. Snow depths ranged from 1' down low, to 2.5'+ with elevation, slight crust down low disappearing as we climbed. Returned along our route of ascent, hitting the scrappy woods along the bowl and below in the dark. If Lamm's Trail had been plowed (or if we had bothered shoveling out a spot or two along the road), the day would have been a LOT less interesting! A hard fought whack in the thick of it with Andrew, Theresa, Barb, and Robert.
