Comments
Comments: Greeley Ponds Trail was packed, which made for quick traveling. The real climb starts about a quarter mile in on the Osceola Trail. There is one really steep section on the way up to the East peak that may rattle some nerves. I wore Hillsound trail crampons, but this was one section that made me wish I had my actual crampons with me. I ended up down-climbing and kick-stepping that section on the way back. From that point on the snow was soft and slippery, but not enough to warrant snowshoes (again, crampons may have helped with the slip-factor). The trail between East Osceola and Osceola is "mostly" uneventful, except for the Chimney - even the work-around is a bit hair-raising since it offers very narrow footing. I'm pretty sure I did some sort of dance-maneuver to get down on my way back. The descent from East Peak required careful and deliberate footing. I saw a number of people heading up on my way down who did not have hiking poles...I would really suggest them for the descent. While I'm all for a good butt-sled or two, after an accidental fall on my butt, I can say that butt-sliding down the top of East Peak is not recommended :) at least I got the chance to test out my self-arrest skills. I only saw one other individual on my way up and passed about 8 people on the way down. Great hike, despite being in the clouds all day.
