One of the hardest hikes I've had in ages- and I've done this loop numerous times in numerous seasons. Was surprised by the additional 4-6 inches of new snow and its texture- sand. On steep sections, it was hard to not slide backwards. The ledges were snow covered over ice. From Wiggins intersection to the top of the ledges, it took me ages to get up due to the snow consistency. While not too hard to follow the trails, (slight depressions here and there), there were no signs of any tracks. Rollins gave me lots of "side sliding". Was glad to ditch my pack for 1.8 Round trip to Passaconway. You know it's a tough hike when you exert yourself descending. Thought it would be relieving heading down Dicey's from junction but dual fall line/slabbing downhill made the battle continue with more side sliding.
Saw no one all day. Some great views from the ledges. Lots of animal tracks, too. It was still GREAT to be out in spite of such a contest. |
