Comments
Comments: Lonesome Lake Trail was packed powder on top of a firm base. Good snowshoeing. Others opted for spikes.
Lonesome Lake has a few inches of recent powder on top of the ice. Good snowshoeing.
Snow stake at the hut was 32 inches.
Fishin' Jimmy was getting rough in places due to buttsliders. Quite a few steeps are down to blue ice now, and buttsliders are overshooting the turns, flying 20 feet into the woods. Makes for treacherous areas for others. Snowshoes with decent crampons could get up these areas, but Microspikers were struggling to get adequate purchase. Snowpack is probably 3 to 4 feet.
Plenty of tracks coming up from the Mt. Kinsman Trail, generally looking like spikes and crampons.
Kinsman Ridge Trail was a good snowshoe track, though buttsliders have made the scramble just north of North a bit difficult. Barebooters were chewing things up just before south, as the powder was still not too well packed. Overall, the snowpack is probably 3 to 4 feet on the ridge with perhaps 3-4 inches of recent powder (plus some snow showers today).
No sign of recent traffic heading southbound on Kinsman Ridge Trail from South Kinsman.
Overall, at least wearing snowshoes, the crust in the woods (firm with a few inches of powder on top) is ideal for bushwhacking right now.
