The Avalon trail was well traveled from the Highland Center to the Mt Tom cutoff and the Willey Range trail. The trail looked good to Mt Tom/Avalon... though we went on the the A-toZ. We were very thankful for 5 snowshoers breaking the A-to-Z. We met 2 of them on the way back. It was a struggle for them. The blazes were few. They told us that staying on the trail was tough. We dropped our packs at Zealand Hut. We made it half way to Zeacliff on a well travelled Twinway before wimping out and returning for the night at Zealand.
The next day we went out the AT/Ethan Pond trail. It has been somewhat broken to the Thoreau Fall trail. My buddy Big Bob broke most of the trail for the next 3.5 miles. It was fairly brutal. Wet snow. I made a big mistake not bringing the tails to my snowshoes. Live and learn. When I broke, I often sunk 2 feet down. Occasionally I sunk past my hips. The last 1.6 miles after the junction with the Willey Range trail was very well broken. |
