Too warm at start – mid 40’s, we delayed to base layer but still sweated under bright and sunny conditions. Trail well packed out, snow a bit sticky but not clinging to our snowshoes. Snow was off the trees. Passed a few bare booters but additional trail damage from them seemed minimal. Some in our group wore snowshoes the entire trip while two in the group switched to crampons on the ridge and back to snowshoes below treeline – didn’t really matter which was used. Trail is still a little rough above the Shining Rock intersection to treeline. Although the temps were comfortable above treeline the wind was quite strong and punching as we headed mostly into it on the ridge. We had to stop and bend over on some gusts. I was actually blown down at one point as we headed to Lincoln. Estimated some wind gusts to be around 55mph. Surprisingly the wind was gentle on the summit under a dark overcast sky. Decided not to attempt Lafayette due to the expected wind in the col plus it had disappeared into a cloud and/or snow shower. Slightly easier going back across the ridge and easy descent below treeline.
