Comments
Comments: Our original plans were to hike into Zealand Falls Hut via the Herd Path/North Twin/Fire Warden's and Lend-A-Hand trails (see separate report for Lend-A-Hand), spend night and get an early start with the intention of summiting Zealand, Bond, West Bond and Bondcliff. When we arrived at Zealand Hut we learned that the trail to Zealand had only been broken out to within a mile of the summit. During dinner the plan was to recruit as many able bodies as possible to help break out the last one mile - thank you Kerry, Terri, Larry, and our enlisted help! Trail to within one mile of the summit already broken out - firm base, the last mile was a different story - without a track for this hike not sure we would have been able to continue. Encountered a number of spruce traps, blazes barely visible, several small blow downs. Broke trail out to spur for Zealand and Zealand summit. Beyond the cutoff for Zealand the trail was heavily drifted over, decision was made not to continue on to the Bonds. For those of you that read the February 20 trip report for Bondcliff that mentions the AMC group hiking south, that was us and we did not make it. On the return to Zealand Falls Hut passed several other hikers coming up so trail should be in fairly good shape. Zealand Trail and Zealand Road out to Rte. 302 are in Great Shape. A special shout out to the hut caretaker Molly!
