Comments
Comments: afer the short walk on rt. 3 i started down east inlet road which is snowmobile corridor. given recent warm weather they have not been grooming the trails. at the junction just past the bridge over the connecticut i checked out an unmarked road that continues straight. noting that it had been snowmobiled since the last storm i hopped on it and followed it to a hard right (south) turn. i then bushwhacked a short distance to east inlet road a few minutes from east inlet proper. i estimate this cut off saved .75 to 1 mile each way, but don't know for sure. the snow on the road kept getting softer and less travelled the farther out i got and the lack of snowmobile traffic was notable. i had tried to walk the road without snowshoes to go easy on my feet, but ultimately had to put them on for purchase.

a bit past mile marker 7 (sign missing) the road drops to cross a brook then starts to climb up to the west of kent. i noted some snowmobile tracks going off trail about where i planned to start my bushwhack so i followed them briefly until they looped back to the road and headed up on a line to the summit. the going was mixed. at times i floated well not going in much more than 6-8 inches, but at others i would post in knee deep or deeper. the snow has consolidated a lot since last week and was wet and heavy. the woods were open all the way with a small amount of spruce right before the recognized highpoint. going down was arguably more difficult as it was very easy to end up posting in deep if i didn't walk gently. snowmobile traffic picked up by mid day and the raod was mashed potatoes for the walk out. after a foggy morning it got quite nice in the afternoon. a very spring like day overall. i clocked this route at about 16.5 miles round trip.
