Peaks Mt. Jackson, Mt. Webster, NH
Trails
Trails: Webster-Jackson Trail, Webster Cliff Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, March 6, 2017
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty of parking at 7:30am at the 302 lot, well plowed. Lot was nearly full at 2pm.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Ice - Blue, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: No problems with any of the water crossings, everything either frozen or easy step across. Even the Silver Cascade crossing near the falls on the way back from Webster was frozen and easy to get over.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Webster-Jackson up to Jackson was well packed no blow downs. Webster Cliff between Webster and Jackson and Webster-Jackson from Webster down to the intersection had several small blow downs that were easy to avoid but the snow is still high enough between the peaks that you'll be ducking under lots of branches.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw two, shouldn't be any problems on the Webster-Jackson up to Jackson as long as they stay out of the post holes.
Bugs
Bugs:
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Retrieved yellow butt sled from summit. Silver hiking pole left at summit cairn. Green bed roll at the base of the steeps just before you ascend the summit cone.

Comments
Comments: Webster-Jackson up to Jackson was well packed and very quick today after a recent 2-3" of snow and hard packed monorail. There is some ice over the 3 lower steep parts but microspikes worked fine. The steep climb just before the summit cone was easier to ascend in bareboots because of there was a lot of exposed rock. My daughter ascended to the left with microspikes on the remaining ice without any issues. Between Jackson and Webster the trail hasn't seen much traffic, just one person since the last snow (plus the two of us today). Snow is about 2"-6" deep and you need to be very careful of the drifted in post holes -- short snowshoes would have been better on Webster Cliff and from Webster down to Silver Cascade - it would also help to pack the trail with the fresh snow that is on the trail. Unfortunately after reading trip reports yesterday we left the snowshoes in the car. Saw about 8 people today -- summit views at both Jackson and Webster were perfect, no wind and temps in the 30's by 1pm.
