Sprang in to spring with a hike to the summit of Mt Monadnock. Hiked the White Cross to White Dot trial to the summit. We wanted to hike the Parker trail to Lost Farm trail but it didn't look like any of those were broken out. White Cross / White Dot at the start of the hike was solid. Micro spikes worked well. You could have used snow shoes but it would be overkill. The day warmed pretty rapidly and we summited at about 1000 h. Light to no wind on summit and not really cold at all. Views were awesome with Boston, Mt Washington, the Whites and Vermont all easily viewable. There is some ice on White Cross and White Dot. At this point no ice axe is needed as there are only patches. However.......extreme caution is the rule. It's ice, it's slippery, there are steep ledges and one can slip and hurt oneself quite easily. We saw two hikers who summited without any micro spikes or other traction. Ah, the joys of youth!
The trail(s) softened on the descent as the day warmed. The snow was softer than when we started but microspikes worked well the entire trip.If one wanted to haul snowshoes along they could have been somewhat helpful in the afternoon but were by no means required. |
