Logging Road, skid roads (recent, that morning the tracks of a single snowmobile all the way high to the bottom of the cliffs), boundary swath/herd path
We snowshoed a figure 8 today on perfect snowshoeing snow conditions--our snowshoe's crampons grabbed the crust and didn't even sink a full inch. We went up logging road following it all the way to the powerline. At the powerline we beelined for the summit. We crossed the snowmobile's fresh tracks several times until we hit the steep cliff and at this point the snowmobile turned around. We decided to follow the ledge to our right and headed back down until we could get around the steep cliff and start up ridge. We did and following the boundary red blazes there were only a couple of short super steep sections. Wow some nice views and we were in awe how steep the cliff and the drop off on the other side of the ridge (felt like a knife edge at times). We found the recognized summit (thanks Zachary and a half dozen more people have been there since, last visitor was in August). It would have been easier if we had turned around and gotten off the peak the way we had climbed up. But we decided to head south on the ridge and enjoy being up there. Well at the col on the ridge we made our way slabbing and luckily finding places we felt we could descend safely, luckily we only had to turn back up once and we slabbed back to the powerline. The wind was really picking up as we crossed this open area. We headed back into the woods and went straight up through more open woods to the high point of the East Peak. Back down to the logging road hitting it near the height of the land and followed it back to the car. Easy going on the crusty snow that carried our weight through lots of open woods. Lovely day, we were sheltered since the peak blocked the wind and we enjoyed blue skies--a pleasant gift since earlier in the morning we had to drive through scary white-out conditions. |
