Hiked up Mt. Tom with 9 people total today. Snowshoes seemed to still be the best option. They were great on the way up, but then the sun came out and warmed the snow and it got super sticky while we were on the summit. We encountered no ice anywhere, everything is covered in snow at the moment. With the warm weather, it was a toss up as to which was better between snowshoes and microspikes. I switched to spikes after getting tired of snowshoes clumping up with snow and losing grip. This just replaced one problem with another as the clumping stopped and the spikes were lighter but then I started postholing. So take your pick. Other than the annoying snow on the descent we had great views in all directions and warm temps, sun, and no wind on the summit. |
