Up and back down the Ammonusuc Ravine trail. Hiked to the Gem pool with just spikes and i switched to snowshoes as it starts steeply up right there, for the televators (heel lifts). Many variables, as there were snowshoers, skiers skinning up, many with just spikes or crampons. Left shoes at the hut and wore spikes the rest of the hike. Above treeline there was a mix of soft snow, solid ice and hard crusty very stable stuff.
Coming down, in spikes, was both fun and tricky as the snow would clump to spikes and cause a few spills with unintended butt slides. All in all, excellent trail conditions, although personally I strongly recommend snowshoes for the ascent. Also, going up to the summit was tricky as the was deep snow right on the normal trail, just as you really have to climb. It was fairly risky and we fond coming down the long slope, further to the left when looking down at the hut, to be hard packed and ice, but far more predictable. |
