Comments
Comments: Cannon was not grooming this afternoon/evening and there were no posted closed signs on this publicly owned and subsidized ski area, so folks were out skinning, snowshoeing, and tailgating.

I ascended the yellow blazed trail up Mittersill, which had some bare spots down low, as well as higher up from the construction erosion. Otherwise, it was spring snow up to the peak with some slush mixed in.

Extended bare stretch from Mittersill down to the Saddle with straw and broken rock from the recent blasting projects. From the saddle up to the top was full coverage. Still plenty of natural above the ski area; was glad to have my snowshoes. Please wear snowshoes when hiking ski areas during ski season.

A little ice on a few of the flights of stairs on the observation tower.

Observed some more recently cut trees in the former Bicknell's Thrush protection area (state acquired the land from the US Forest Service with the mandate not to cut any trees beyond the original ski area footprint, but subsequently gave itself a waiver).

Still jarring to see what the state and special interests have done to this once beautiful Mittersill backcountry area.
