another great redlining trip in the Sandwich Wilderness! the beginning of Blueberry ledge still has a good 6" thick icy monorail, don't know if it continues past the junction with MP, but i was kinda surprised to see it. the eastern end of MP is easy to follow (blue blazes)...pretty wet in places, but it's spring. however, once the yellow blazed 'reroute' around/thru the Irene storm damage begins, you really need to pay attention, because the blazes are spread out. after the junction with the ski trail, MP descends along the book (very scenic) and is easy to follow down the woods road and eventually to dirt road and houses. (returning west on MP thru the re-route is very tricky...no blazes.) SPECIAL NOTE here...the white dog (pit/beagle mix?) that lives in one of the houses at the beginning of the western end of MP is an AWESOME hiking buddy. he came out to greet me while i was looking around and hiked back to Ferncroft with me. i tried several times to get him to go home, but he couldn't be persuaded. he very willingly got in my car and i drove him back to his house at the end of the day. Tilton Spring path is lovely thru open woods and Pasture Path up to Katherine much of the same. |
