Comments
Comments: The Moat Mountain Trail up to South Moat and Middle Moat is a good choice in the transition season. It is a south facing slope with no brook crossings and a relatively low elevation. There was no snow up to South Moat. There was a little snow in the col between South Moat and Middle Moat but it was easy to avoid while remaining on the trail. The wet ledge areas required care to avoid slippage. Not much mud due to rock ledge surfaces and well drained sand.
It was clear under a cloud deck of 4,400 feet so there were good views of the lower summits. I could see a cleared out forest west of Moat Mountain. I don't know if this was due to last year's forest fire or logging operations. Many hikers out today but not a crowd.
