Trails
Trails: Iron Mountain Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, May 20, 2017
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: At the small parking area atop Iron Mountain Road in Jackson, probably the best Class VI road I've ever seen. ;)
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The lower section of the trail continues to succumb to severe erosion and is in very bad condition. :( The USFS is going to be doing some relocations but there is no ETA as of yet. The upper section is in better shape. Several blowdowns between the summit and the cliffs. A four way junction just before the cliffs could be confusing and needs a directional cue.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Sure.
Bugs
Bugs: Black flies, but not too bad here.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nothing.

Comments
Comments: A quick visit to Iron and the south cliffs on my way to Conway. The south cliffs are the best spot on the mountain. It was just me and a couple of rock climbers up there. I first thought about going to Black Cap, but knew this would be far less crowded. The trail was dry overall, except for the short logging road segment, which is muddy and swampy.
