Plan was to do a counterclockwise loop of Monroe and Washington. Started up the Ammo in the fog around 10:30. Trail was very wet and muddy and crowded at the lower elevations. There were a few small patches of snow about a 1/4 mile from the Lakes of the Clouds hut. There was only one small ~30 ft. section of snow/ice where micros might be needed if descending. Other than that, ascending without traction is a no brainer. There were no views on the ascent and Monroe was socked in the clouds. The hut was "half open" meaning you could use the bathroom -- the AMC staff were still moving in and they didn't want anyone inside. Also met a thru-hiker who started in January (!). The sky cleared up as soon as we got to the Mt. Washington summit offering spectacular views. The summit was a zoo as usual, but the veggie chili was nice. The trek down Gulfside to Jewell trail was pretty uneventful, except running into some extreme skiers that were attempting to ski down the gully into Great Gulf. Jewell is completely snow free and was a nice relaxing walk down to the parking lot. |
