We walked down the road for about 1/4 mile before heading into the woods. Our track took us up one of the many small drainage slots to the ridge that the old Bear Mountain Trail followed (this trail was abandoned in 1960). Continuing on the ridge we followed several moose trails through several open areas and finally toward the peak. We saw several trees with old blazes cut into them and one rock with a small cairn on top from the old Bear Mountain Trail. Extensive moose activity made the final ascent relatively easy passing by the recognized summit. The herd path continued but we retraced our route as best as we could to leave time for Haystack-Bartlett. |
