Trails
Trails: Webster Cliff Trail, Webster-Jackson Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Thursday, July 6, 2017
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: A few spaces open at Saco Lake when I arrived (9 a.m. on a Thursday) and departed (4 p.m.); no vehicles were parked down the road where the AT crosses US 302.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: no major crossings, and the small streams on Jackson-Webster seemed low
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Webster Cliff (AT) Tr. from US 302 to Mt. Webster in good condition, although blazing could be better, especially on the slide and scrambles going up Mt. Webster, where it is sometimes unclear which way to climb. Between Webster and Jackson there are some deteriorating planks in the small marshy meadows, and Jackson-Webster Tr. seemed even more eroded, wet, and muddy (for most of its length) than when I was on it three years ago.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Quite a few happy dogs on Jackson-Webster, but scrambles on Webster Cliff would make it difficult for dogs.
Bugs
Bugs: no issues

Comments
Comments: I biked down from Crawford Notch to begin hiking at the Webster Cliff trailhead on US 302 (don't do this if you're peakbagging). The highway is very steep (13% grade) and shoulders are narrow at times, and there is quite a bit of truck traffic, so care is essential! Webster Cliff trail has a little bit of everything (excellent views, short scrambles, even a bit of a slide), but the part from US 302 to Mt. Webster could be difficult if you're a beginner or acrophobic.
