Comments
Comments: A cold morning in the twenties but comfortable with out the wind. Above 1400 feet or so there were spots of black and solid ice on rocks and ledges, all avoidable at this point. Gunstock Mtn blowing snow, already about eight inches. Awesome clear views of snow clad Mt. Washington in distance. The Belknap Range trail down the east side of the moutain heading towards Round Pond was trickiest spot of day, with steep slabby ledges with some black ice and other ice flows then about 150 foot steep descent down huge talus, fortuntatly ice free, but with feet deep leaf filled holes. Round pond is gorgeous, worth the extra two miles there and back. Piper link is a deceptive trail, very leaf covered, ups and downs, and a very steep, loose rock, leafy final climb out of gully to meet ridge of Piper Mtn. Able to turn a day in the Belknaps into a "real hike" route was 7.6 miles and approx 2800 gain.
