Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked at head of Bunnell Notch trailhead...about 100 yards beyond Unknown Pond trailhead. Arrived at 0915. No cars at Unknown Pond trailhead. Two other vehicles at Bunnell Notch trailhead. When we finished at 1730 there were still no cars at Unknown Pond trailhead and three or four vehicles parked along the road by the Bunnell Notch trailhead (which only has room for three or four cars). No parking fees. Gate at Berlin Fishery entrance was still open when we left.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Several water crossings on Unknown Pond Trail back and forth over the same stream. None of them were difficult to cross.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Bunnell Notch Trail and Unknown Pond Trail had a good bit of overgrowth that gave them a bit of a bushwahacking feel. Though trail was never difficult to follow. Didn't see very many splashes marking the trails. A few but wouldn't have wanted to need them. This comment from the 8th still applies "Major recent blowdown on unknown pond trail roughly a mile from York pond rd trailhead. Probably needs a chainsaw to resolve. We were able to skirt it on upslope side." Though I think it was more like 2-2.5 miles from the trailhead. Several bog boards in bad shape.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Didn't see any but trail would have been fine for them.
Bugs
Bugs: Got tagged a few times by the Unknown Pond but otherwise wasn't too much of a problem. Heavy rain half of the hike might have helped limit their activity.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: n/a

Comments
Comments: Awesome hike. All the trails were easy with very gradual ascents and descents. Heavy rain for about half the hike along with thunder caused us to skip the Horn. No views and chance of lightening made it less attractive. Heavy rain made Unknown Pond Trail quite the mud adventure. All the same...enjoyed the hike even in the downpour.
