Comments
Comments: It was a mostly clear day above the trees with just a few clouds caressing the summit of Washington by mid afternoon. The temperature was 50 at most with fairly strong winds making it feel a lot colder so layers were necessary. Castle Trail was muddy in some spots but in good condition and is my favorite way up Jefferson due to the rock scrambles over the Castellated Ridge. We descended via the Castle Ravine Trail, one that neither of us had ever been on before, and found that it was not quite what we expected. It was very narrow and overgrown and in some places takes a second to find where the trail leads, especially when trying to spot the continuation of the trail across the 10+ stream crossings it makes. However, if you want a better chance at solitude in the Presidentials I would recommend it if you're willing to cross a lot of water and ascend/descend the extremely steep and sometimes loose rockpile that is the Ravine's headwall. The view coming down the headwall is unique as is the rock cave/tunnel the trail passes through in the woods near the floor of the ravine.
