Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: the swift river crossing is really low and narrow right now. depending on your height...water level hits upper calves when fjording.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Brunel tr between Sawyer Pond tr and the Rob Brook road walk was the 'hardest' section to follow in terms of defined footbed. Once it leaves the road and goes back into the woods, it's more defined. i thought the blazing was fine. fair amount of blowdowns, but most easily walked over or around. there was one, (in the col, if i remember correctly), that seemed fairly fresh. a mess of branches and no defined bypass, but the woods are open enough to get around it. Owl's cliff spur was fine. loose gravel in spots on the steep section up to Tremont summit.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: yeah, i think a dog could handle this, but not much water.
Bugs
Bugs: too frosty on this morning for bugs.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: nada

Comments
Comments: after reading previous posts about the obscurity of Brunel, i was concerned about staying on the trail, but in all honesty it's not that bad. (i think McCrillis Path is worse.). there was only one spot (maybe halfway up??) where the trail jogs right, when i stopped to make sure i was on the trail. cool temps and winds...spent most of the day in my light fleece. at one point gloves and the buff came out of the pack. (felt like Oct.1 rather than Sept. 1.) leaving the summit i retraced my steps to the col and set bearing to BW down to the pond. the woods are a mixture of open hardwood and young spruce and hobblebush that did it's best to 'hobble' me. once down to pond, set another bearing to pop out on Sawyer Pond tr. (total BW steps about 1.5mi) Sawyer Pond (from the pond back to the Kanc) is a very nice gentle grade and trail is wide...there might've been a couple of blowdowns. about a mile from the trailhead parking lot i saw my first people of the day.
