Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: At AMC Cardigan Lodge. The main lot was almost full when I arrived, so I parked in the overflow lot. Both lots were full when I returned.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Several running drainages on this loop, all easily crossed.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: In general, everything is in great shape. One duckunder on Elwell and another on Back 80. On the old road portion of Back 80, lots of areas are flagged for work. Below Crag Shelter, Mowglis could use a little light brushing in spots, but it's not really a problem.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Sure. Plentiful water flowing after yesterday's rain.
Bugs
Bugs: Still a few.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nothing.

Comments
Comments: This was originally going to be a loop over Firescrew and Cardigan, but the ridge was in a cloud and it was wet, cold and windy. At the Firescrew summit, I decided to loop back to the lodge the long, quiet way.

Plenty of water and wet ledge on Manning. The steep scrambles in the woods just before breaking out of the trees were slick. I took the bypass for the first one. Ledges were drying out in the open due to the wind.

Slow going down the ledgy sections of Mowglis due to wet conditions. Better below Crag Shelter. The shelter is still in decent shape, although the roof has seen better days. The stream near the shelter was flowing good.

Lovely walking along the remainder of the route. The beaver ponds along Back 80 were very scenic. Plenty of muddy stretches along these trails as well as the others. I love the backcountry routes in this area as they are beautiful and hardly anyone uses them. Despite the crowded parking lot, I only saw eight people all day.
