Having camped along the East Branch Saco River we were able to get an early start. Headed up the trail to a point where an old logging road crossed and decided this would be our whack starting point to Black-3304'. The moose were very kind and kept this road well defined so we followed it to within a few tenths of our goal. From here we whacked through relatively open but steep woods to the recognized summit which is actually on top of a large rock (erratic). the summit is fairly flat and overgrown with hobble bush and raspberry bushes but with a little exploring we had excellent views to the east and north. One view of Carter Notch, Carter Dome and the Wildcat Range was particularly rewarding. Following our track back to the junction with EBT we then proceeded to Baldface (West) via the same logging road, now heading easterly. This side of the trail was completely different in that the trees were mostly all fir and hemlock as opposed to the hardwoods we encountered on the Black whack. Leaving the 'road' in about 1 mile we headed up toward the summit of Baldface (West) and found the recognized high point on the exposed ridge. This open ridge provided 360 degree views of all the major peaks in the area. Again we simply retraced our track back to EBT and the walk back to the vehicle. Thanks Gordon and Rueben for a super 2-day trip. |
