Date of Hike: Wednesday, October 4, 2017
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Diagonally across from the trailhead on Rt. 302 at a large pulloff.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: No issues. The tributary crossing is a trickle at the moment.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: I continued trimming hobblebush along the lower switchbacks. Still more to do, but it might need to wait until next year. No issues with following the trail, it just needs a haircut. The corridor improves as you climb and the hobblebush disappears. I cut out the hanging branches from a high widow maker which was reported here recently. No blowdowns.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Sure.
Bugs
Bugs: STINGING INSECTS. About 1.1 mi. up the trail is a bee / wasp / hornet nest in a stump on the ground. This is at the end of the flats after the old logging road crossing and just before a small drainage. A few hikers have been stung here, so use caution. I saw a couple things flying about, so I bushwhacked around to the left. The spot is marked by two branches forming an X.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nothing.

Comments
Comments: This was a maintenance visit, see notes above. The trail was dry with the usual muddy areas within the first half mile. I startled a large snake on the way down, not sure what kind it was. There's a little bit of foliage color, but most everything is still green, and many leaves have already withered and fallen. Patches of dull red visible in the valley from the summit.
